“Woman in Mallorca”, a watercolour by Kurt Jungstedt (1894–1963), dated -52

This mysterious watercolour is signed Jungstedt and dated -52

Kurt Jungstedt was the son of film director Emil Linden and opera singer Matilda Jungstedt. He studied at the Technical School in 1909 and at the Wilhelmson School of Painting in 1911-1914, and with Henrik Sørensen and Oluf Wold-Torne in Oslo in 1915-1916. He lived in Copenhagen in 1917-1919, where he experimented with Cubism. During the 1920s, he also spent time in Paris. Kurt Jungstedt first made a name for himself as a decorator on the ships M/S Kungsholm (1928) and M/S Drottningholm (1929), the latter depicting realistic hunting images on a silver background, and for Valandhuset in Gothenburg (1932). Kurt Jungstedt illustrated some thirty books. Among others, he is represented at the National Museum, Moderna Museet, Gothenburg Art Museum, Skoklosters Castle, Gothenburg University Library, Norrköping Art Museum, Statens museum pour Kunst in Copenhagen and the National Gallery in Oslo. He illustrated eleven of Zola's works, as well as other Swedish and French classics.
